The first postcard recorded in history was sent by writer & practical joker Theodore Hook of Fulham, London in 1840. Since then during the 1870's, postcards were sent to communicate advertising and were souvenirs of national defence. The picture postcard increased in numbers to communicate tourist attractions during the 1880's like the Eiffel Tower of Paris, built in 1887.
The Royal Mail gave permission for private printers to manufacture their own postcards in 1894, the first manufacturer of the British postcard was ETW Dennis of Scarborough.
